What we do| A Heart for Mission
The Brew City Catholic Missionary Project is an initiative of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee serving the local Church through forming and sending full time missionaries to work with young adults on our college campuses and beyond. Missionaries serve for 1-3 years, live in community, enter into formation, and devote themselves to daily prayer, a rich sacramental life, and life in the Spirit, all while inviting other young adults into a life of Catholic discipleship through genuine relationships.

Why Missionaries?
According to surveys conducted by the Pew Research Center only 30% of Americans who were raised Catholic are still practicing. Nearly 80% of those who became unaffiliated, left Catholicism by age 23. A total of 13% of all U.S adults are former Catholics. Even within the Church only 31% of Catholics believe the Eucharist is truly the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Christ.
These statistics are staggering, and can be discouraging. They reveal the state of our culture and the Church. More and more, belief in Christ and His Church is met with indifference or hostility. College students and young adults are longing for truth, authentic community and belonging, meaning and purpose, and to know who they are. This longing can only be truly satisfied through Christ & His Church. |
This is why missionaries are vital. They witness to life in communion with God, a life given over to His path and His pace. They share life's joys and sufferings with a peace that can only come from our Lord. Their primary call is first to know they are created, infinitely loved, unique, and unrepeatable; then to courageously and humbly share what Jesus has done, and is doing.
Ultimately this missionary call is to all Catholics. But having young adults formally serve as a missionary is like a master class in Catholic Discipleship and the New Evangelization. It gives them a sense of mission and conviction to live their faith, witnessing to the love of Jesus Christ for the rest of their lives. Through their time, efforts, conversations, and prayer, our missionaries greatly multiply our reach to young adults throughout the Archdiocese. In forming young Catholics, the missionary project also impacts future vocations (priesthood, religious life, sacramental marriage, lay ministry) and strengthens the life of our parishes long term.

Support
Each Brew City Catholic Missionary is asked to build a Mission Support Team. This team becomes an essential part of the missionary’s work by supporting them financially and praying for their ministry, outreach, and personal formation. Fundraising their salary is another radical way that missionaries are invited to trust in God's plan and providence as well as to invite others to generously invest in and encourage the work of evangelization in our local Church. If you are interested in connecting with a missionary to hear more about their work and be invited to give, reach out to Micah Pfundstein at pfundsteinm@archmil.org. If you'd like to support the Missionary Project overall use the link below.
